Your Fall Home Maintenance Checklist
Be prepared for fall changes and keep your home ready for the upcoming seasons and cooler months ahead.
Prepare Your Outdoor Living Spaces
- Remove exterior sump pump hose and garden hoses from exterior faucets at temperatures below 0°C.
- Check downspouts and make sure that they are pointing away from your house. Clean eavestroughs as required.
- Wash windows and doors, clean weep holes, and lubricate tracks.
- Inspect your weather stripping adjust or replace stripping on exterior doors as needed
- Inspect exterior caulking and touch up as needed.
- Clean off exterior deck and put all patio furniture away.
- Cover outdoor plants to protect them from frost.
- When snow arrives, remove ice and snow as soon as possible, use sand for grip, do not use salt.
Indoor Maintenance tips to keep your home in great shape.
- Prepare your heating system: run early in the fall to test the furnace and to change the furnace filter according to your HVAC maintenance guidelines.
- Adjust your registers and make sure that drapes and furniture are away from all air vents.
- Clean the filters of your HRV unit at least once every three months: vacuum them first, and then rinse the filters under warm water until clean and air dry.
- Set and adjust your HRV between 30-40% as needed.
